Dr. Lemmel died in Annapolis on Thursday, January 29, 1953, after falling ill while addressing a joint legislative committee in the Senate chamber. (The hearing concerned proposed legislation to increase minimum teachers' salaries.) According to the Sun's report, he "collapsed within two minutes after he began his remarks at the lectern of the reading clerk's desk in the Senate chamber." Prior to his collapse, he "gripped the sides of the lectern and said: 'I do not think I can go on.'" He was taken into the Senate lounge and then to Anne Arundel General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following a funeral in Baltimore at Brown Memorial Church, he was buried at Lakeside Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Dover, Delaware.(MD Archives)
